Neuromuscular Dentistry

Neuromuscular Dentistry is a concept in which there is a position in space where the jaws are in their proper physiologic position. The muscles of the jaws, face, and neck determine this position. At this position these muscles should be in a completely relaxed state and the TMJ is in its proper position. This position is called physiologic rest position (PRP). In this position there is muscle harmony and pain is eliminated. From PRP we can determine with great certainty, where the person’s bite should be. When the patient has a neuromuscular bite, the muscle activity is balanced and the biting forces are directed in the correct direction.
